Summer Exhibitions

July and August 2005

Ready and willing to overcome your summer torpor? While the summer is undeniably time for relaxation and recreation, the Richard L. Nelson Gallery at UC Davis is offering a provocative trio of new art exhibitions.

Starting on Thursday June 30th through Sunday September 18th will be an exhibition at the Buehler Alumni Center of Fred Snyder’s “On Expedition 1978,” photomontages and filmed documentation of a mischievous escapade in Egypt with his late collaborator David Whipple. These large panoramic photographs and the film reflect 1960s and 70s artistic fascination with one-time-only events and the visual language that we use to recall them.

From July 5th through July 22nd in the lobby of the art building the Nelson will be hosting an exhibition of selected paintings by 1962 MA alumna Viola Hildebrand. A resident of Davis for over 55 years, Hildebrand has been a teacher, illustrator and artist in the community.

Finally, from July 22nd through August 26th in the Nelson Gallery, local sculptor and video artist Terry Berlier presents Remain Human: The Slatter’s Court Project. This mixed media and video project is inspired by the struggles of the residents of the legendary Slatter’s Court cul-de-sac neighborhood near downtown Davis. Slatter’s small cottages and trailers house Davis’ last ties to its agricultural and working class history. The artist lived there for several years before graduating from UC Davis with an MFA in 2003.
