JOINT VENTURE
Most Ambitious Exhibition of Photography in Region’s History
Comes to Nelson Gallery at UC Davis
If you have ever wanted to take a crash course on the history of the past one hundred years of photography, you have a unique opportunity to do so for free at "Joint Venture", a collaborative exhibition at the Nelson Gallery and at Davis’s Pence Gallery. The exhibition, curated by UC faculty member and photographer Matthias Geiger and Nelson Director Renny Pritikin, opens January 5th and runs through March 19th, 2006.
Included are some 150 images, drawn largely from the collection of Davis resident Dr. Barry S. Ramer, supplemented with contemporary work collected from throughout the United States and Europe. Famous names such as Arbus, Winogrand, Bourke-White, Atget, Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Friedlander, Lange, Meyerowitz, Stieglitz, and Weston and many others are represented as well as younger artists such as Richard Barnes, Alec Soth, Richard Misrach, Vik Muniz, Tina Barney and many others.
Curator Geiger states, “When we are taking pictures, we are recording events for a future re-view. Joint Venture is re-mixing history, weaving narratives, and creating an art world photo album portraying the evolution of the medium and its multitude of expressions.”
The Nelson Gallery is located in the UC Davis art department in Room 124. It is open Monday through Friday from 11 to 5 and on Sunday from 2 to 5. The Pence Gallery is located at 212 D Street in Davis and is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5:30, and until 7 on Fridays.

Exhibition of Sculpture Honors Recently Retired Art Professor Emeritus Gyongy Laky
Gyongy Laky, UC Davis faculty member for 27 years, is a seminal figure in the practice of incorporating fabric and natural materials into contemporary sculpture. The Nelson will show a selection of recent work in its Project Space. The Smithsonian Institution is currently assembling a collection of Laky's personal papers, photographs and
documents at the Archives of American Art.
Exhibition of Drawings and a Sculpture by Renowned Young Artist from New York, Marcel Dzama
At the same time the Nelson offers a quick glimpse at the work of Marcel Dzama. Recently named the “Canadian Wunderkind” by the New York Times, Dzama's haunting pen & ink drawings employ a fairy-tale sensibility to depict complex adult themes. Dzama's drawings will be accompanied by a rare sculpture from a recent edition by Trillium Press, and The Dracula EP as sound track. Entryway Gallery.
The Nelson Gallery is located in the UC Davis art department in Room 124. It is open Monday through Friday from 11 to 5 and on Sunday from 2 to 5.
