Still Moving: Selected Video by Four Photographers

EXHIBITION AT UC DAVIS’ NELSON GALLERY BRINGS TOGETHER FOUR VIDEO ART WORKS INSPIRED BY PHOTOGRAPHY

DATES: from September 28th to December 10th. Opening Night is Thursday September 28th from 6 to 8pm
WHERE: at the Richard L. Nelson Gallery, UC Davis, Room 124 of the Art Building.

Would you agree with many critics who argue that photography made realistic painting obsolete? New art forms undeniably influence if not replace older forms. Now photography is in its turn being challenged by video art. This exhibition consists of four projected video works from the past decade that are by artists who began as photographers or who utilize photography in their video. Audiences can judge which form is the most powerful and relevant to them. Artists included in the exhibition are photographers William Larson of Philadelphia, Nic Nicosia of Houston, and Will Rogan of San Francisco. Video artist Hiraki Sawa of Japan utilizes the photography of San Francisco’s Eadward Muybridge, the 19th century master, in his work. Examples of the artists’ still photography will also be on display.

These works have in common a light-hearted humor, a silent or near silent sound track, use of subtle illusion, and a setting in the everyday world of indoor rooms and suburban streets.

“Whether it’s Will Rogan executing near-impossible feats or Sawa making objects on his kitchen counter come alive, these tapes are hilarious and oddly spiritual at the same time,” says Nelson Gallery Director and Curator Renny Pritikin.

The Nelson Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11 to 5 and on Sunday from 2 to 5.
