TEMP WORK: Temporary Public Art in Downtown Davis

TEMP WORK:

SEVEN TEMPORARY PUBLIC ART OFFERINGS THIS SPRING
CO-PRESENTED BY NELSON GALLERY OF UC DAVIS AND THE DAVIS CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION

Do you ever think about what you would do with public spaces if you were given free rein? Seven artists are being given just that chance from April through June, as the city makes available spaces for their installations and events around the historic Southern Pacific Depot.

“This remarkable collaboration between UC and the city will result in seven temporary works that will entertain and move visitors,” says Renny Pritikin, director of the Nelson Gallery. Plans call for four installations and three events spread out over the three months of the project. The schedule is as follows:

Exhibitions:

1. Outdoor sculpture by Sacramento artist Dave Lane, in front of the SP Depot, from April 9th through June 30th. Lane recycles 19th century steel machinery and transforms it into 21st century cosmic models.

2. Installation in the former Police Substation by San Francisco artist Alan Rath, from April 9th through May 5th. Rath uses custom digital electronics to store visual images that will peer out of the windows.

3. Installation in the former Police Substation by Davis artist Diana Jahns, May 14th through June 2nd. Jahns will create a pastel forest.

4. Installation in the former Police Substation by Las Vegas artist Stephen Hendee June 8th through June 30th. Hendee will create a stark, science-fiction inspired interior.

Events:

1. Weedwalk by Bay Area artists Arcangelo Wessells and Michael Swaine, April 21st. The public is invited to join the artists on a walking tour of the flora of downtown.

2. Welcome reception for Amtrak commuters, including music and keys to the city, organized by Davis artists Steve Lambert and Cynthia Yardley, May 11th 3 to 5 pm.

3. The Tactical Ice Cream Unit of the Center for Tactical Magic, with UC theater professor Larry Bogad, on June 8th “rollin' out with frosty treats & food-for-thought!” The Ice Cream Unit will be parked at the SP Depot from 3 to 6 pm.

All Exhibitions and Events will be free and open to the public. For further information contact Torreya Cummings at tjcummings@ucdavis.edu or call 530 752-8500, or visit the nelson gallery web site at http://nelsongallery.ucdavis.edu.
